MUNAJAAT al-KHAIFEEN (MUNAJAAT OF THE FEARFUL ONES)
Allah (swt) loves His servants very much; He has not created them to punish or make them miserable. The purpose of our creation is to worship Allah (swt) and the aim of worship is to gain His Ma’arifah.
Our merciful Lord out of His passion, mercy, and care, bestows favors upon man and keeps on doing, but on the other hand man keeps on disobeying Him, going against His commands.
In this Munajaat, Imam is presenting his fear of Allah (swt)’s anger/wrath and our sins (the main thing to fear). This is because sins have an effect (directly/indirectly) on others in the community and Allah (swt) looks at the benefit of the majority. Hence
He punishes the minority so as to lessen crimes while it would be vice versa, if mercy is shown to them and the majority left in discomfort. Therefore, the punishment of
Allah (swt) is also a mercy for the whole community. Here Imam is using the technique of sweet talking to Allah (swt) and hence it’s lazzatul
Munajaat.
إلهِي أَتَراكَ – “ O my Lord, (how is it possible) should I see You as the one:
1) Fear of punishment (physical and metaphysical) – بَعْدَ الإِيْمانِ بِكَ تُعَذِّبُنِي – “ Who will punish me after I have believed in You?”
2) Fear of distance from Allah (swt) – أَمْ بَعْدَ حُبِّي إيَّاكَ تُبَعِّدُنِي – “and after I have loved You in my heart, You are going to keep me at a distance (away from You)?”
3) Fear of deprivation of His mercy – أَمْ مَعَ رَجآئِي برحمَتِكَ وَصَفْحِكَ تَحْرِمُنِي – “and as for my hope in Your mercy and pardon, You will deprive me of it (O my Lord)?”
4) Fear of Allah (swt) abandoning me – أَمْ مَعَ اسْتِجارَتِي بِعَفْوِكَ تُسْلِمُنِي؟ – “as for my seeking alliance/ allegiance of protection from You with Your forgiveness and pardon, You will abandon me and forsake me to the balaa’ (afflictions)?”
