Fifty-four supplications form the main body of the Saheefa which includes an addendum of fourteen supplications and fifteen Munajaat (whispered prayers); a book that embodies the answers to many of the spiritual questions faced by the man of our age or as described by Chittick (an American philosopher, writer, translator and interpreter of classical Islamic philosophical and mystical texts) as “one of the deepest veins of Islamic spirituality”.
The duas cover almost all areas encompassing the needs of human beings especially
theological dealings, defining calling upon God as the act of addressing Him with ones praise, thanksgiving, hopes, and needs. Keeping the community in mind the Holy Imam did not miss duas for great occasions like Eid ul Fitr or Arafah, etc as well as supplications for children and parents, in which Imam Sajjad (as) speaks as if parents were still alive!
The constant theme of Saheefa is to seek God’s mercy and avoid His wrath showing human imperfections and how to seek His mercy constantly to save oneself from His wrath.
Social and political justice also weren’t left out since the times refers to the injustice suffered by his family, the Ahlulbayt (as), and the usurpation of their heritage.
Other examples are when the Imam prays for the Muslim community and the rectification of its affairs, as well as the soldiers guarding the Muslim frontiers.
