Camper Diary
Today was a super fun day that was full of many interesting things. The permaculture class was very fun because because we actually got to do a lot of hands-on stuff and planting too. The classes with Sheikh Shirazi and Sajjad Bha taught us a lot about time management and a lot about our Khoja culture.
We went to the Jozani Forest and saw many types of animals. We fed the tortoises and turtles, watched the snakes and monkeys and had a beautiful walk through the forest.
Everything we learned from our permaculture class was put into practical use. We talked about the quality of good soil and how the trees in the forest help each other too.
It was very tiring but we had a good day. We also got to spend more time with other campers outside our own group elements. The bus that we were on was also very fun because we conducted our own version of Shias Got Talent, called “Bus Got Talent” where we all recited a lot of nice Marsias and Manqabats.
Mentor Diary
I had the honour of participating at the Camp as a guest teacher and it was wonderfully uplifting for me. Every activity at the Camp has been crafted to provide spiritual, moral and intellectual nourishment for the campers and mentors.
The specific module I taught: “Embracing our Culture & Heritage” reflected this. The campers defined different elements of culture and identified different examples of rituals, traditions, food, cuisine, clothing, art, architecture – as well as exploring language and shared values. There were in-depth discussions where campers elaborated on the positive aspects of culture and how to maintain, preserve and enrich these – while removing the negative elements of culture that contradicted Islam.
I learnt an incredible amount from the campers – whose curiosity and depth of conversation was inspiring. The maturity of insight and honest, articulate and respectful way the campers communicate underlines the incredible potential we have. It is our responsibility to keep on nourishing this further.
The Mentors and Camp Admin are working very hard at this – enthusiastically and energetically investing in the development of campers. One example that really impressed me was the 1-on-1 wudhoo & salaah assessment session done with every camper – where they were given individual feedback on areas of improvement for their wudhoo and salaah. I observed campers very meticulously making changes to their wudhoo and salaah after this – implementing the feedback that they had been given right away.
The remote location and the idyllic, scenic setting of the camp help create an environment where the campers can be comfortable and feel energised to work on their growth and development. The facilities are comfortable, the food is excellent and the experiences are planned to be fun and engaging while richly nourishing the soul, mind and body.

I hope you are having a great time at the camp as we are also enjoying and having a blast on our little vacation without you. Don’t worry we promise not to have to much fun without you… okay, maybe just a little!!
So enough about us, camp is an opportunity for growth and adventure. I know it may feel tough at times, but trust me you are going to come back with amazing stories, unforgettable memories and some seriously cool survival skills.
Can i take your phone back now as i am sure you must have forgotten about it by now?
Thank you to the organizers for this great initiative and I hope this is done frequently.
